The Government has announced funding that will help to insulate 300,000 homes in a bid to cut energy waste and bring down bills.
The £1 billion ECO+ fund is branded as The Great British Insulation scheme, and it could save householders around £310 every year*.
The ECO scheme is expanding to upgrade the homes of people living in the coldest housing (those with an EPC-rating of ‘D’ or below) in the lower Council Tax bands. It will also help the most vulnerable people in the community, including households who were not previously able to access existing government-backed energy efficiency schemes.
ECO+ will give many more people the chance to benefit from new home insulation to warm up their homes and lower their bills. Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, the Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP, said, “A new ECO scheme will enable thousands more to insulate their homes, protecting the pounds in their pockets.”
Insulating cold homes is one of the best ways the UK can cut down on energy use and lower its carbon emissions.
Installing measures such as Loft insulation and Cavity Wall insulation through ECO+ will help to reduce wasted energy, as well as tackle fuel poverty and high energy bills.
The £1 billion in ECO+ funding will join the £6.6 billion ‘Help to Heat’ schemes already in place, including the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund, Home Upgrade Grant and Local Authority Delivery Scheme.
New plans to drive down carbon emissions and make UK energy cheaper were also unveiled by the Government.
The strategy – called ‘Powering Up Britain’ – is focused on increasing UK energy independence with investments in clean energy such as offshore and onshore wind, solar and nuclear power.
Government proposals include boosts for hydrogen technology, heat pumps and electric vehicles, as well as funds to develop heat networks, which are a zero carbon solution for heating homes and businesses.
Carbon capture power stations also formed a central part of the Government strategy to achieve Net Zero targets and tackle climate change.
Insulating some of Britain’s leakiest homes through ECO+ will be a big step towards reducing UK carbon emissions, while cleaner sources of energy mean a brighter future for everyone.
